LAND ROVER LR004805 iPod Interface Installation tutorial.
(This offering does not include the ACM module and cradle – see below)

INTRODUCTION

The LR004805 iPod car kit allows you to charge and play iPod™ products on the factory HK audio system. The LR00485 Kit adapter delivers CD quality sound directly into the factory sound system in all 2005-Up LR3 and 2006-Up Range Rover Sport (not compatible with Range Rover) via the AUX port and eliminates the use of noisy RF modulators.  The iPod™ clickwheel is not compromised allowing you to search and select music directly just as you would in portable use. You will also be able to track up/down, FF/REW and browse Playlist using the steering wheel audio controls. The Kit will also charge the iPod when the ignition is “ON” and will pause when not in AUX mode.

The control module also includes inputs for USB memory devices. The LR004805 is connected directly to Land Rover audio systems via the auxiliary input. (AUX button on radio).  This hard-wired solution delivers quality audio and safe control of the Players from the vehicle’s steering wheel controls. Connecting and installing this kit is a plug-n-play

 INSTALLATION

This guide is to help those who wish to save $$$ by performing their own install. Use at your own risk as we will not assume responsibility for damages.

1.      HARNESS INSTALLATION

For illustration purposes we will be installing the LR004805 car kit in a 2005 LR3. The same procedure would apply to the RR Sport.

Parts Required:

1 LR002787

1 Radio T-harness

1 iPod dock connector harness

Tools Required:
drill bit with T-15/T-20 Torx or T15/T20 Torx head screwdriver
– see Fig. 1

Fig.1

 2.      Remove the radio/AC trim bezel piece by pulling outwards (toward gear shift). Place hands (one on each side) to the bottom edge of the bezel and use your fingers to gasp the panel. Pull bezel outwards towards you-- do not jerk or you may end up in the back seat :). If necessary apply more pressure. As an alternate, remove one side first by putting four fingers to the back of the bezel, pull outwards to release tabs, repeat process on the other side.

Fig 2a bezel in place

Fig 2b bezel removed

3.      Remove 2 torx screws securing emergency flasher/door lock panel, 4 torx screws securing radio and 4 torx screws securing AC controls.

4.      Pull radio outwards (do not jerk)

5.      Disconnect the antenna plug and orange fiber optic cables (this step is not required but it would be wise to disconnect them and avoid damaging these expensive cables)

6.       Disconnect the radios 20/12-pin speaker /power plugs (black): Pry down on tabs and pull away from the radio— do not apply excess force. These plugs slide out easily when the tab is pushed downward. See Fig.3

Fig. 3

7.      Note the T-harness included with this kit has two 20/12-pin plugs and two 20/12-pin connectors. Plug the factory 20/12-pin plugs removed from radio (see Fig. 3) into the mating 20/12-pin connectors on the T-harness. See Fig 4.(1 & 2 )

8.      Plug the other 20/12-pin plugs on the T-harness See Fig 4 (3 & 4) to the matting connectors on the back of the radio.-- make sure they are seated all the way or push until they click

Fig. 4

9.      Route the 22-pin plug ending of the T-harness to the location where you will be mounting the interface box (LR002787) See Fig. 5.  We opted to mount the interface box in the cavity next to the radio/navigation screen securing the interface box to a large black harness with a wire tie. See. Fig 6 [5 (22-pin plug)-- the arrow points downward where interface box was secured]

Fig. 5

Fig. 6

10.  You may opt to install the interface box in any location that is within 3.5ft of the radio. This is as far as the T-harness will allow.

11.  Fig 6 (5) shows where the T-harness 22-pin plug was routed under the Navigation screen support bracket.

12.    Pull on  the 22-pin plug so that there is less wires behind the radio. The residual was left in the cavity. Connect the 22-pin plug See Fig 6 (5) to the mating connector on the Interface.--  See Fig 9

Fig. 9

Fig. 8

13.  Connect the iPod cable to the 9-pin connector on the interface (See Fig 8)  Any USB and/or 3.5mm AUX input cables must be connected to the interface box and routed to the location where these devices will reside (glove box, center console, armrest, etc) your choice. We did not connect a USB or auxiliary device and therefore omitted from this tutorial.
Note: The LR004805 kit offered here (unlike the Kit offered by Land Rover) does not include the ACM (Audio connectivity module) or Cradle. All connections (USB, iPod, AUX) are to be made directly to the interface box.

14.  In our test vehicle the iPod docking plug was routed to the left of the dashboard. We used our own PHLDB iPod holder which is adjustable and may be used instead of Land Rover Cradle (See Fig 9)

Fig. 9

15.    iPod docking cable routed along the dash and hidden between panels – See Fig 10

Fig. 10

16.    Re-install radio and A/C controls by reversing steps 3-6. Try to leave the T-harness plugs atop the radio, otherwise the radio may not fit. Rearrange the T-harness so that they are less wires behind the radio, otherwise the radio may not go back enough to secure it in place.
Optional : Mount iPod holder (PHLDB) base to car using self adhesive stickers —
See Fig.11

Fig. 11

17.    Next step is to mount iPod holder to base— See Fig 12

Fig. 12

18.    Mounted iPod to holder and connected docking cable—see Fig. 13

Fig. 13

19.  With everything in place it was time to test the interface and radio. Note that the PHLDB allows all iPod with dock connectors. From this location we were able to read the iPod screen and use the clickwheel without any problems.
Note: As of the today, It is our understanding that the cradle offered by Land Rover will not accommodate the new iPod Nano because the dock connecter is no longer centered..

 20.   OPERATING THE iPod VIA THE AUDIO SYSTEM

Note: Audio system button cannot be used for controlling the ACM.

21.   CONNECTING A USB MEMORY DEVICE

Music files can be stored on USB memory devices. The ACM has connection facility to support a USB Memory device.

Connect the USB Device and press the “AUX” button to tell the audio system to playback the USB memory device.

a.      Press track up or down once to change the track

b.      Press and hold the track up or track down for 2 seconds to change the folder
